Joseph Chirlee Posts Olympic A Standard In 10k With 27:43.96

(Wageningen, NL) Joseph Chirlee took one more shot at improving his chances to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic team and his tenacity payed off when he nabbed the Olympic A in the 10,000-meters at the Tartletos Loopgala in Wageningen, Netherlands, Wednesday night.

Chirlee (US Army) finished 4th in a field of 19 that saw 4 under the Olympic A of 27:45.00, including Chirlee's 33-second personal best of 27:43.96. Under cool conditions, the field marched through 3k and 5k at 8:19 and 13:50, respectively, before speeding up with Hassan Mahboob wining in 27:21.40.

With only the top three at the U.S. Olympic Trials who have also bettered the Olympic A Standard of 27:45.00 being selected for the U.S. team for London, Chirlee is now in a small pool of nine contenders who have that mark. Ranked 5th in the U.S. for the year now, his challenge is simply to finish in the top three, regardless of time. Complete results can be found at: http://www.tartletosloopgala.nl/wordpress/

Chirlee Finishes 15th In US Olympic Trials 10k

(Eugene, OR) Under a cold Northwest downpour, Joseph Chirlee (US Army) gave his best in an attempt to make the US Olympic Team, but fell short finishing 15th in the 24 man field. Chirlee, who came into the Trials as one of only six men with the Olympic A Standard of 27:45, put himself in contention early latching on to eventual champion and Olympic Trials record breaker Galen Rupp.

Despite the cold downpour which slowly sapped his strength, Chirlee stayed at the front of the field through 6,000-meters, until Rupp and Nike-sponsored training partner Dathan Ritzenhein began to trade laps leaving the field behind.

Chirlee, determined to give his best, hung in to finish 15th with a time of 28:17.84, his third best mark of all time in a year that saw him improve from a 10k best of 29:00 to an Olympic A mark of 27:43.

Despite 5th in Olympic Trials 10k, Williams Misses Olympic Team

(Eugene, OR) Alisha Williams (adidas/Boulder Running Co.) put herself in contention to make the US Olympic Team but because of Olympic qualifying procedures, and the fact she did not have the Olympic A Standard coming into the meet, she came up short.

Williams finished 5th with a time of 32:08.51, which was off the Olympic A standard of 31:45, which resulted in 1st, 3rd and 7th place taking the three spots for London.

Going into the trials and aware of the need to run the A standard, adidas/BRC teammate Wendy Thomas, who was the last woman accepted into the field who had run a personal best the week before at the US half marathon, stepped up to lead the race and set an Olympic standard pace. Her efforts were spot on, until Nike’s Shalane Flanagan charged to the front only to come to a near stand still causing a traffic jam that resulted in at least one fall. Williams kept her feet and hung on for 5th,while Thomas was 20th in 33:17.40.

Williams 9th In Olympic Trials 5,000-meters

(Eugene, OR) After 20,000-meters of Olympic Trials track racing, not counting her 14th place at the 2012 US Olympic Trials marathon (a total of 62k), Alisha Williams (adidas/BRC) finished 9th in the finals of the 5,000-meters.

Williams advanced to the finals with a 5th place finish in the prelims two days earlier, and, without an Olympic A mark as was her case in the 10k, she went to the front to set a fast pace.

Williams and Kim Conley shared pacing duties, but after getting boxed in with the leaders surging up front, Williams was out of contention for the top three spots, but fought hard to hold onto 9th in the 16 woman final.

Williams finished with a time 15:32.98 to end a season that saw personal bests at 10k (32:03) and 5k (15:24), saw her set a PR for the marathon with her Olympic Trials debut of 2:35, and saw her earn berths on two US national teams.

Williams Wins Cal International Marathon; Neal 2nd At Las Vegas

(Sacramento, CA) Alisha Williams (adidas/BRC) broke away over the last 10k after battling 30mph head winds and torrential wind to win the Cal International Marathon with a personal best time of 2:34:58.

Williams, originally set for the New York City Marathon 4-weeks earlier, was forced to look for an alternate race after Hurricane Sandy forced organizers to cancel that event. Mario Macias (adidas/BRC), who led the charge early in the downpour for the men, tried to break away from the pack on his own was pulled back in, but rallied for 6th.

Opting to avoid the CA weather, Adrian Neal (adidas/BRC) switched to the Rock&Roll Las Vegas Marathon and was met with warm and windy weather as well. Neal engaged in a 26.2-mile duel with US naturalized former Romanian national team member Nuta Olaru, which came down to a 30-meter kick with Olaru taking the title with Neal two seconds back.
